PhD Position in Database Integration
The Faculty of Business Administration at Memorial University of Newfoundland is inviting applications for a PhD in Information Systems with an emphasis on database integration. The project is supported by a grant from the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
The deadline for applications is March 1.
Project Description:
Database integration is a process with multiple steps, leading from the identification of the databases to the testing of the integrated system. The central step of this process is the identification of database elements that are similar to each other. This step is called schema matching. Human users perceive schema-matching methods as successful when they match database elements according to the same similarity criteria that the users would apply. Many automatic software-supported schema-matching methods have been proposed, using a range of different notions of similarity. However, existing research has paid little attention to empirical work: There is little knowledge of how human data integrators judge the similarity of database elements. A recent study has shown that a "one-size-fits- all" approach does not apply and that human notions of similarity are strongly affected by the database integration context. The proposed research is a study to systematically examine how human database integrators carry out schema matching. This knowledge will then be applied to implement improved schema matching methods.
Application Criteria:
The applicant will have a Bachelor (Hon) or Master`s degree and strong interest and background in information systems, computer science, or cognitive science with knowledge of databases or knowledge representation. Interest (and preferably experience) in both technical and empirical research is required.
Applications must meet the regular admission criteria and will undergo the regular admissions process for the PhD program.

[New Zealand] Development Scholarships by New Zealand`s International Aid and Development Agency
New Zealand Development Scholarships
The New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) scheme offers the opportunity to people from selected developing countries to undertake development-related studies in New Zealand.
This may include study related to education, health, rural livelihoods, governance, human rights, or economic development, depending on the human resource development training needs of the home government.
New Zealand -Development Scholarships are offered for full-time, tertiary level study at participating New Zealand education institutions.
The NZDS scheme has two categories:
I. New Zealand Development Scholarships – Public category (NZDS-Public)
The NZDS-Public scholarships scheme is a bilateral scheme available to individuals from selected partner countries in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The selection criteria is determined by the partner government and NZAID.
Shortlisted applications, mostly from public sector employees, are endorsed for a scholarship by the partner government. Employees from civil society or private sector organisations may apply for the NZDS-Public in some countries depending on country-specific selection criteria. The levels and fields of study available for study in New Zealand are determined according to the partner country`s human resource development training needs.
II. New Zealand Development Scholarships – Open category (NZDS-Open)
The NZDS-Open scholarships scheme is a non-bilateral scheme available to candidates of some developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Pacific. Under the NZDS-Open scheme, candidates independently apply for a scholarship.
NZDS-Open scholarships are generally directed at employees of private sector or civil society sector organisations, including non-governmental organisations. In some countries, public sector employees can also apply for a NZDS-Open scholarship depending on the country or region-specific selection criteria. This criteria also determines the levels and the fields of study under which candidates can apply to study in New Zealand.

[Netherlands] Ph.D in Economics and Public Finance at Erasmus University
Ph.D. positions in Economics and Public Finance at Erasmus University Rotterdam
The Erasmus University in Rotterdam in the Netherlands is looking for Ph.D. students in economics. The Ph.D. students will be part of a young research team, led by prof.dr. B. Jacobs and prof. dr. R.A. de Mooij, which operates in the twilight zone of public finance, macroeconomics, labour economics and applied policy analysis. The research is not only scientifically relevant, but also has relevance for economic policy and society at large. The group cooperates intensively with the CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Dutch Ministry of Finance, the OECD and the European Commission. Research results are also highly visible in the public policy debate. The research group provides courses in economics of taxation, public finance and tax policy at the BA, MA and PhD level to students in economics, fiscal law and econometrics at Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Tinbergen Institute. The ambition is to have a complete research group of about 15 talented, ambitious and young people working in public finance and public policy in 4-5 years from now on. Multiple Ph.D. projects are currently available. The following abstracts summarize the projects.
Application has to be received by 15. January 2009
Abstract Ph.D. project 1
An applied empirical analysis of capital income tax reform in the Netherlands
In 2001, the Dutch government fundamentally reformed the income tax by introducing a dual system in which labour and capital incomes are taxed under different regimes. Especially the taxation of capital income was a major novelty since the tax on the presumptive return is unique in the world. The reform involves a quasinatural experiment and offers an opportunity to identify various behavioural and tax elasticities. This research aims to estimate elasticities at a number of these behavioural margins, such as the debt-equity decision, the choice of legal form by small firms, the decision to retain or distribute profits, and the investor portfolio choice between owner-occupied housing, pensions and widely held shares. The estimated elasticities will be used to calibrate an applied general equilibrium model that we will develop and which focuses on the tax treatment of capital income. The model allows for a comprehensive welfare analysis of the tax reform of 2001. Moreover, it can be used to analyse alternative tax-reforms such as the adoption of a consumption tax or a comprehensive tax on capital income, which includes a tax on capital gains.
Abstract Ph.D. project 2
Skill formation in distorted labour markets
The main question of this research proposal is: how do modern welfare states and distortions in labour markets affect the incentives for skill formation over the lifecycle? Labour force participation, hours worked, and later retirement raise the returns on human capital investments from initial schooling and on-the-job training, and vice versa. Less human capital investment results in lower wages, and thereby reduces the economic incentives to participate in the labour market, to work more hours, and to retire later. Extensive welfare states and imperfections in labour markets could be important in explaining weak labour market performance and, as a result, weak incentives for skill formation. Labour market imperfections and welfare state policies may also shift the wage profile over the lifecycle, thereby affecting the incentives for training on-the-job and (early) retirement. Analytically tractable general equilibrium models will be developed to study the interactions between distorted labour markets and skill formation. Various labour market imperfections (caused by unions, search frictions, efficiency wages, or insiders-outsiders) and welfare state policies (education policy, minimum wages, wage subsidies, labour market protection legislation, tax policy, unemployment insurance, retirement schemes) will be analysed. The policy relevance of this project is high. Firstly, skills are crucial determinants of labour productivity and income. Secondly, skill-biased labour demand shifts jeopardise the earnings and employment prospects of the low skilled and increase income inequality. Thirdly, low labour force participation rates of older workers are worrisome in light of ageing populations.

[Germany] PhD Position in Functionaltranscription Factor Analyses at UUSC Institut fur Transplantationsdiagnostik Undzelltherapeutika
Comparing gene expression profile of umbilical cord blood derived unrestricted somatic stem cells (USSC), very primitive mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-like cells, we identified transcription factors that are
To analyze the role of such transcription factors in controlling the decision self-renewal versus differentiation we like to functionally characterize identified candidates. In the course of the project over-expression and loss- of function studies of corresponding factors should be performed. For the over-expression studies cDNAs encoding the transcription factors of choice should be cloned into lentiviral vectors. To reduce the activity of the transcription factors appropriate RNA-interference mediating plasmids should be created.
After transducing non-induced USSC with corresponding lentiviral plasmids, effects on the cell fate of USSC should be studied in comparison to controls using established read out technologies.
After identifying any factor whose altered-expression results in a recognizable effect on the biology of USSC, it will be analyzed in detail. To identify down stream targets of such factors global gene expression analysis should be performed in comparison to appropriate controls. By performing these expression analyses at different time points post transfection, we like to identify early, intermediate and late responding genes. During the course of the project distinct transcription factors belonging to the group of early responding genes should be selected, and analyzed.

[Denmark] PhD Scholarship in Plasticity at Technical University
PhD – Scholarship in Plasticity Department of Mechanical Engineering, Solid Mechanics Section A 3-year Ph.D. scholarship is available at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Solid Mechanics Section, from mid 2008.
Reinforcement of polymers using carbon nano-tubes or nano-sized SiC particles can be applied to increase the stiffness. For composites, in which the reinforcing fibers are on very different size scales, very high strain gradients in the matrix material near the fibers can affect the overall properties significantly.
Higher order continuum theories (strain gradient models) can be used to model the matrix material at the relevant small scale, accounting for effects of boundary layers of constrained plastic deformations around the hard reinforcing fibers. For the relatively low volume fractions used in nano reinforced materials it may prove useful to also add fibers on a larger scale. The effect of reinforcing materials with fibers on different length scales is the focus of this Ph.D. study.
The aim is to develop methods for analyzing nano- and micro-reinforced materials, through advanced numerical models accounting for the relevant small scale plastic deformation. The Solid Mechanics Section at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has a long tradition of front edge research within the area of materials mechanics, and we have close collaborations with other strong groups both in Denmark and abroad.
We offer a stimulating environment, focused on research at an international level. Candidates should have a master`s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master`s degree in engineering.

[UK] PhD Studentship in Computational Models of Visual Processing at University of Edinburgh
PhD Studentship - Computational Models of Visual Processing Institute of Communicating and Collaborative Systems.
The Institute of Communicating and Collaborative Systems (ICCS) within the School of Informatics and the Human Communication Research Centre (HCRC) invites applications for a three-year PhD studentship funded by the European Research Council, starting in September 2008. The successful applicant will work on a project that investigates the synchronous processing of linguistic and visual information.
The project studies key features of synchronous processing by tracking participants` eye movements when they view a naturalistic scene and listen to a speech stimulus at the same time. The experimental results will feed into a series of computational models that predict the eye-movement patterns that humans exhibit when they view a scene and listen to speech at the same time. These models will incrementally construct aligned linguistic and visual representations, and will be evaluated against eye-tracking data.
The PhD student will be part of a team of experts in linguistic and visual processing, including both experimentalists and computational modellers. The student
will contribute to the modelling component of the project, and should have previous experience in image processing, computer vision, or computational models of perception and attention.

[Netherland] PhD Position Rotterdam School of Management at Erasmus University
We are looking for excellent candidates for the PhD project.
Title PhD project:
Intelligent Trading Agents that Facilitate Decision Making in Multi-Agent Marketplaces using Preference Modeling
PhD supervisors:
Eric van Heck, Wolf Ketter
Abstract:
Modern business networks and markets are highly dynamic and exhibit a high degree of uncertainty. Under these conditions business managers are routinely faced with complex strategic, tactical, and operational decisions; decisions ranging from the macroscopic (i.e. which markets should we enter and when?) to the microscopic (i.e. which products should be packed on which pallet?).
Also customers are faced with multi attribute decisions, such as from whom can I book a travel under certain constraints (money, time, quality, etc)? Within this project we investigate how learning agents may be designed to support humans in these decision making processes. We define learning agents as software entities that carry out some set of operations on behalf of a user or another program with some degree of independence or autonomy, improve their performance from experience and in so doing employ some knowledge or representation of the user`s goals or needs.
The candidate must fit in the following profile: MSc or MBA degree in Business Administration, or Management & Economics, or Information Management, or Computer science & Economics; Excellent study record; International orientation and the capacity to speak and write in English; Affiliation with the IT industry, Commitment and drive to execute PhD research.

[Netherland] PhD Position in Removal of Compounds in ppm Range by Adsorption at The Technische Universiteit Eindhoven
(TU/e) has the following vacancy PhD Student "Removal of compounds in ppm range by adsorption" (V37.627) at Laboratory for Separation Technology and Transport Phenomena (SST), Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry.
The Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry (ST) is one of the nine departments of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). It was established in 1957. The department has approximately 390 employees (360 fte), 13 full professors, 370 undergraduate students (bachelor and masterstudents) and about 170 graduate students (140 Ph.D. and 30 design engineers). The department aspires to be an academic institution for education and research in chemical science and engineering that meets the highest international standards.
The aim is to generate and to develop technology and scientific knowledge relevant for the long-term needs of society. Scientific curiosity and the use of newly generated knowledge are the main driving forces for the continuing enhancements of the three chosen fields of expertise: molecular, materials, and process engineering.
Tasks :
The research project is carried out within a larger framework of two from the Dutch Separation Technology Institute (DSTI) (www.dsti.nl ) in which over 40 companies, institutes and universities cooperate. The two projects are:
Removal of compounds present in ppm concentrations in aqueous streams (SC-00-004)
Removal of compounds present in ppm concentrations from organic bulk chemical streams (SC-00-006)
The research will be carried out in a cooperation between 5 university groups, TNO and industry. The incentive is that in numerous processes compounds present in the ppm range need to be removed from a process stream or final product, because of demanded purity. Most frequently distillation is used for such separations, but in view of energy consumption, costs and elevated temperatures, alternatives are desired.
Next to other alternatives to be studied by the other 4 PhD students, the subject of this study is to identify the opportunities for adsorption as possible technology for such separations. Based on a joint definition of compounds, streams and conditions, an overview of possible adsorbents and technological modes of operation will be made in the first year, jointly with the other students who have similar tasks for their technology. A choice is made for the cases to be investigated in more detail, in which both experiments and modeling will be core activities.
The aim is to integrate the gained knowledge into a process model for a specific production process, allowing to establish proof of concept. The theoretical, modeling and design work will be carried out in the SST laboratory under the guidance of dr.ir. E.A.J.F. Peters and Prof. dr.ir. P.J.A.M. Kerkhof, the experimental work in the Process Systems Engineering laboratory of prof. dr.ir. A.B. de Haan. Close cooperation with the participating companies (Akzo-Nobel, General Electric, Lyondell, Shell) is foreseen.
Requirements :
As a PhD-student you have an excellent record in your studies of chemical engineering. You combine an excellent scientific talent with a sound feeling for applicability in practice. You have the ability to acquire knowledge of adsorption fundamentals, of relevant practical possibilities from a large number of sources, and to devise and carry out the relevant experiments. So you combine depth with overview.
You have a proven ability in modeling and numerical methods allowing you to evaluate models. You are creative, and a team player, and have a good feeling of project organization. You have excellent communicative skills, and are fluent in English. Also students who are in the final stage of their study are invited to react.
Appointment and Salary :
We offer: a full-time contract for 4 years, with an intermediate evaluation after 1 year. You will start with a gross salary of 2000 per month in the first year, increasing to 2558 per month in the fourth year. Furthermore, you will also benefit from attractive secondary job conditions.

This project is funded by SenterNovem IOP IPCR. The following research groups and industrial partners are involved in this project:
Research groups:
- Division Quality and Reliability Engineering, faculty of Technology Management, DTI / Technische Universiteit Eindhoven
- Division Information Management, Faculty of Management and Organisation, the University of Groningen
- Division Information Systems, faculty of Technology Management, DTI / Technische Universiteit Eindhoven
Industrial partners:
Philips CE
Oce Technologies
Stork
Philips PMS
CFS

Project goal
Modern innovative industrial product development processes are facing a number of increasing and conflicting trends that strongly influence the industrial product creation process:
The continuous influx of new technology
The complexity of the product
An increasing pressure on time to market
Products are currently no longer created by stable, often monolithic companies but by increasingly volatile and dynamic international business networks.
Traditional field feedback information (e.g. service center) has supported development organisation to prioritize their development activities in preventing mismatches between product specifications and customer requirements for the product family or even for the same product generation. However, the trends mentioned above requires such information as fast as possible, and much earlier in the development process.
Interestingly, mainly thanks to advances in ICT, potentially much more information could be available for use in the development process. User forums at the internet, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) at service, user helpdesk and many other, related, information sources can potentially provide valuable decision support information very quickly. The main problem, however, is that these data sources contain huge amounts of data that are often very dynamic and volatile in structure.
The aim of this project is to develop a system that has the ability to extract relevant information from these dynamic, incoherent, data sources and to translate it into valuable decision support information for use in the product creation process.
It concentrates on five primary sources of information:
Test data obtained during the product creation process
Service data
Helpdesk data
Internet data extracted from, for example user forums
Trade
These datasets, however, are not all collected to support product development. Some of them are much unstructured. The fast development of ICT has made it technically feasible :
to extract smaller but far richer databases from those structurally very diverse databases.
to identify the (consumer complaints, use, and etc. ) patterns in different databases
Three PhD students are involved in this project:
One PhD student from the field of Quality and Reliability Engineering, concentrating on developing a new information process to provide development with the required information.
One PhD student from the field of (Business) Information Systems,, concentrating on knowledge acquisition methods to extract structural information from different types of consumer databases into a so called development warehouse.
One PhD student from the field of Information Systems, concentrating on the identification and deployment of suitable mining techniques that can be applied to identify various patterns in the development warehouse.
We try to select a candidate for the third position. The candidate will be employed by the division Information Systems (IS) faculty of Technology Management, DTI / Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. However, there will be a strong cooperation between two other candidates employed by the two other mentioned research groups. In the project there is a great opportunity to combine science with real-life applications on data of the mentioned industrial partners. TU/e is internationally renowned for its research in the areas of process mining, workflow management, and process modeling.
Requirements :
For these positions we are interested in candidates a solid background in Computer Science or Business Management. Candidates having a background in data mining and process modeling (e.g., Petri nets) are specially welcomed.
Appointment and salary We offer:
a full-time temporary appointment for a period of 4 years
a gross monthly salary of € 2,000.00 during the first year up to € 2,558.00 during the fourth year of the appointment
a broad package of fringe benefits (e.g. help with housing, child care, savings schemes and excellent sports facilities)

[UK] PhD Scholarship in Transport and Society at University of The West of England
PhD Studentship funded by Great Western Research and Stagecoach Devon Implications of Free Senior Citizens` Bus Travel for the Sustainability Contribution of Bus Networks.
Introduction
The decision to offer free travel to people over 60 years of age on local bus services throughout England was one of the most important policy measures affecting the sector for years. Despite this importance, the policy was subject to little analysis prior to implementation.
Although proving popular with beneficiaries, in the last two years the policy has emerged as highly controversial with bus companies and local authorities charged with its implementation and amongst other interests in the transport sector competing for scare public resources. The three-year full-time PhD opportunity is supported with a studentship co-funded by Stagecoach Devon, the principal provider of public bus services in the County of Devon, and the South West Regional Development Agency, through the Great Western Research initiative.
It will examine the wider implications of the policy of encouraging additional travel in terms of the benefits over-60s experience, the overall mix of bus passengers, the resource and environmental costs, and implications of the subsidy for bus regulation. In addition the success with which additional demand for bus travel was predicted as a result of the policy will be examined.
The supervisory team brings together research experience in respect of transport policy evaluation, travel behaviour and public transport regulation, combining it with private sector bus industry expertise and further public sector assistance from Torbay Council, the local authority responsible for one of areas most affected by the policy.
The successful applicant will pursue his or her studies in a social scientific context, working towards award of a University of the West of England doctoral degree. The student will be a member of both the Centre for Transport & Society (UWE) and the Centre for Sustainable Transport (Plymouth) specialist transport research groups. In addition s/he will benefit from the facilities of the UWE Faculty of Environment and Technology’s Graduate School, which offers excellent research training following Economic & Social Research Council guidelines. The candidate will also maintain close working relationships with Stagecoach Devon and Torbay Council.
The candidate
The successful applicant will have a broad interest in the importance of promoting sustainable mobility and an understanding of the importance of conducting objective evaluations of policy initiatives. S/he will have a good first degree or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline such as geography, economics, transport or environmental studies. Ideally the candidate will have experience of applying mixed-methods research methodologies and be willing to acquire additional skills such as questionnaire and database preparation, statistical analysis, GIS analysis, or qualitative interviewing and textual analysis as necessary.
The successful candidate will have excellent communication and personal management skills, able to optimise use of the specialist range of resources offered by the two supervisors and their universities and the private and public sector partners.
Studentship
The PhD studentship covers fees and pays a stipend for three years. The stipend will be equivalent to the research council rate of £12,940 in the 2008/09 academic year with cost of living adjustments in years 2 and 3.
Eligibility to apply
There are no nationality or residency restrictions on applications being considered, but the opportunity is available for full-time study only and the successful candidate should be in a position to begin study promptly.
